Presidential Highlights:
· Vetoed a bill that would have created a Third Bank of the United States. This caused almost all of Tyler’s cabinet members to resign.

· Opposed federal spending for public works (to build schools, roads, bridges, etc.), but disliked import duties even more. So, Congress proposed a compromise (the federal government would give states profits from federal land sales, which the states could use for public works. But public works would be allowed to die if Congress raised import duties) which Tyler approved.

· Eliminated the federal agency to protect the value of federal funds.

· Signed the Apportionment Act changing the way House Representatives are elected (causing House members to be elected form single member districts).

· Declared a cease fire between the Seminole Indians and the U.S. government.

· Pushed for the annexation of Texas.

· Approved the Webster-Ashburton Treaty with British Canada (defined the northeastern border of the United States).

· Approved the Treaty of Wanghia, allowing U.S. goods to enter China.

· Purchased Hawaii.
