Presidential Highlights:
· Enforced the Sherman Antitrust Act by suing Northern Securities Co. (the owners of a monopoly). The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Roosevelt's Administration by a 5 to 4 vote.

· Intervened in the United Mine Workers (UMW) strike. When mine owners refused to bargain with the UMW, President Roosevelt threatened to take over the mines. A panel was set up to arbitrate the dispute. The UMW won higher wages, but failed to win the right of collective bargaining.

· Approved the Immigration Act (allowed immigrants to be deported for associating with political radicals and making political statements).

· Used the U.S. Forest Service to save millions of acres of forest lands. Established the first U.S. wildlife reserve.

· Approved a treaty with the new Panamanian government to build the Panama Canal (gave the United States a 99-year lease on the canal land).
