Presidential Highlights:
· Requested federal funds for public works projects (to build schools, roads, bridges, etc.). Congress rejected almost all of these programs.

· Supported the Tariff Act of 1828 (raised import duties on foreign goods), protecting the eastern states manufacturing industries from foreign competition. Southerners and westerners detested this bill calling it the "Tariff of Abominations."
