Presidential Highlights:
· Created the Office of Economic Opportunity (oversees antipoverty programs), Job Corps (proved housing and job training for poor young people), and the Volunteers in Service to America program (a volunteer agency that works in poor communities in the United States).

· Approved the 1964 Civil Rights Act (banned discrimination in employment an in public facilities).

· Aproved the Voting Rights Act (enforced the rights of southern black to vote), and a fair housing law (outlawed discrimination in housing).

· Created the Medicare program (provides health insurance for the elderly) and the Medicaid program (finances medical care for the poor).

· Conflict in Vietnam. In 1964, North Vietnam (a communist country) attacked an American destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin. President Johnson asked Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. By 1968, there were more than 550,000 American soldiers battling in Vietnam.
