Presidential Highlights:
· Civil War. After Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter, Lincoln order a naval blockade of the southern border, beginning the Civil War. At first, the Union Army performed poorly. By late summer 1861, Lincoln doubted his generals could win the war, so he took control of the Union strategy. By 1862, the Union Army was regaining ground. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, ending the war.

· Emancipation Proclamation. Between September 22, 1862 and January 1, 1863, Lincoln freed the slaves in Confederate states, and abolished slavery in all federal territories.

· Was shot dead 1 month into his second term in office.
