Presidential Highlights:
· Vetoed a bill renewing the charter of the Second Bank of the United States.

· In 1832, Jackson removed federal deposits from the National Bank and deposited them in state banks. This caused the National Bank to close in 1834, and pushed the U.S. economy to the brink of collapse. But Jackson blamed the economic crisis on paper money, and outlawed all currency except for gold and silver coins.

· Economic Panic of 1837. Jackson issued the Specie Circular (prohibited the federal government from purchasing land with any currency other then gold and silver coins). Gold and Silver were scarce, leaving too little money in circulation. This caused the economy to collapse, and the value of land dropped sharply.

· Supported more public works programs (to build schools, roads, bridges, etc.) than any previous U.S. president

· Negotiated 70 treaties with Indian tribes, moving Indians from the eastern and southern regions into he Western Territories.
