Presidential Highlights:
· Ended the federal occupation of the South, ending Reconstruction.

· Favored the policy of backing greenbacks with gold. The U.S. treasury built up gold reserves worth nearly $130 million. Investors gained confidence that paper money would retain its value. This caused the economy to eventually recover from the depression left from President Grant's Administration.

· Vetoed a bill that would have reversed the Burlingame Treaty. Instead, he sent a commission to negotiate with the Chinese government. The Chinese agreed to limit the number of Chinese immigrants to the United States.
