Presidential Highlights:
· Allowed the Freedmen's Bureau to expire.
· In 1872, approved a general amnesty for the South (restored the political rights of most of the former Confederates).
· Approved the Klu Klux Klan Act (imposed martial law in areas controlled by the Klu Klux Klan).
· Approved the Civil Rights Act of 1873 (attempted to end discrimination against blacks in public accommodations, such as: trains, buses, hotels, restaurants, etc.).
· Vetoed the Greenback Bill (would have increased the amount of currency in circulation). This veto increased economic uncertainty. Deflation spread across the country.
