Presidential Highlights:
· Approved the Compromise of 1850 (allowed states entering the Union to decide for themselves whether to be free or slave holding states, and required free states to capture escaped slaves and return them to their masters in the south). Both Northerners and Southerners disliked this compromise. Southerners disliked it because they feared that more states would enter the Union as free states. Northerners disliked it because the compromise required free states to enforce slavery through the capturing of escaped slaves.
