Presidential Highlights:
· Signed a truce dividing North and South Korea by the demilitarized zone at the 38th parallel.

· Ordered a nuclear buildup to prevent a possible Soviet nuclear attack.

· Helped found the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (created a U.S. backed military alliance in Asia).

· Desegregated the federal government by executive order. Ordered signs keeping blacks out of areas in federal buildings to be removed. Sent federal troops to Arkansas to escort blacks to their desegregated schools.

· Approved the Interstate Highway System which was the largest public-works project in U.S. history.

· Announced the Eisenhower Doctrine (committed the United States to aid Middle Eastern countries threatened by communism). President Eisenhower sent U.S. troops to Lebanon to prevent a communist takeover.

· After Fidel Castro (a communist dictator) gained control of Cuba, President Eisenhower embargoed U.S. imports of Cuban sugar.

· Supported increased funding for U.S. space and defense research. In 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was established.
